Chemistry

Chemistry has inherited many techniques and instruments from alchemy. During the eighteenth century, it was seen as a suitable subject for women because it could be carried out at home and was related to domestic activities such as preparing medicines, soap, dyes and preserved foods. In World War One, many many thousands of women were employed as chemists in munitions factories, thus proving that they were capable of carrying out work normally reserved for men.
