Engineering

Engineering and technology became increasingly important in Britain after industrialisation began in the mid-eighteenth century. Unlike in other countries, British scientists tended to regard engineers as inferior, looking down on them for coming from a lower social class, being engaged in heavy manual labour, and trying to become rich through the patents system. Women have been involved in engineering since the early twentieth century, but even though physical strength is no longer required, it remains a male-dominated area.
